The Louis XVI style owes its long afterlife partly to one admirer: the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. She was fascinated by Marie-Antoinette, collected furniture from her apartments and decorated her own rooms in the late queen’s taste. Fashionable Paris followed, and a revival called the Louis XVI-Impératrice style took hold in the 1850s and 1860s. It lasted well into the early twentieth century, filling French homes with neat classical sconces, mirrors and furniture.

This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the early twentieth century, belongs to that long revival. Each has a central backplate shaped like a slender, inverted baluster, hanging from a small ring at the top as if suspended from a nail, a playful touch borrowed from the ornament of the period. A band set with small square rosettes wraps around its waist, and a pointed drop finishes the base. From the band, two scrolled arms decorated with leaves curve out to hold wide, fluted drip pans and candle cups fitted with drip-effect sleeves. The gilt finish is bright and warm.

The sconces are in good condition. Together they weigh 2.5 kg, so they feel solid. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a bedroom, a salon or a hallway, either side of a mirror or a doorway.
