Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Tapering Backplates with Draped Urn Finials and Acorn Drops, Two Lights Each
French Neoclassical designers made great use of a tapering pedestal called a gaine, French for “sheath.” It is wide at the top and narrows towards the foot, and it began as the support for portrait busts in gardens and galleries. Under Louis XVI it was shrunk down for clocks, candlesticks and wall lights. On a sconce it gives an upright, architectural line that suits a doorway or a mirror.
This pair of wall sconces is built on that tapering form. Each backplate narrows from top to bottom, with a squared panel at the head, a carved-look drape of fabric falling down the face, and a small acorn drop at the point. On top stands a little urn, hung with tiny drapery swags and capped by a pointed finial. The draped urn was one of the most popular Louis XVI motifs, borrowed from the decorative vases of ancient Rome. Two arms decorated with small leaves curve out from just below the urn. Each ends in a wide drip pan and a turned cup with a beaded rim, topped with a drip-effect candle sleeve. The gilt finish is bright and warm.
The sconces are in good condition, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. Their slim, upright shape suits narrow walls: either side of a bedroom mirror, a door frame or a bookcase.
