Vintage Pair of Rococo Style Mirror Candle Sconces with PuttiAttributed 19th Century, Patinated Metal, 21 cm

Few figures appear in European decoration as often as the putto, the plump winged child whose name is simply Italian for “little boy.” Sculptors of the Italian Renaissance revived him from ancient Roman art, and by the Rococo period putti were everywhere: tumbling over clocks, playing among scrolls on picture frames, and holding up candles on walls.

This pair of candle sconces brings putti to the wall in that spirit. Each has an oval mirror set in a richly cast frame of scrolls, flowers and leaves, with a pair of putti playing at the top and others climbing the sides. At the base of the frame sits a small mask, a face of the kind often used as a decorative keystone. From the bottom, a curving arm rises in front of the mirror to hold a leaf-wrapped bobèche and a fluted candle cup. When a candle is lit, the mirror behind it doubles the glow.

The sconces are in very good condition, with a warm, dark patina. They show old lead solder repairs, and the mirror glass is a later replacement. Both are honest parts of their long history. These are true candle sconces, not electrified, and they look lovely flanking a fireplace or a dining room mirror on candlelit evenings.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Rococo style mirror candle sconces in patinated metal, with putti, attributed to the nineteenth century. Each is 21 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
