Vintage Pair of Two-Light Wall SconcesGilt Brass with Faceted Glass Drops and Glass Rosettes, Petal Drip Pans and Pine Cone Finial, 27 cm

Every French chandelier maker of the old school kept boxes of glass drops sorted by shape: pear drops, almond drops, leaf drops, and small flower-shaped rosettes for hanging them. A wall light could be dressed lightly or lavishly, and the drops were hung from wire hooks so they could be cleaned, replaced or rearranged. The French call them pampilles, and their whole purpose is to catch a flame or a bulb and scatter it as small points of light.

This pair of wall sconces is dressed generously. Each has a slender gilt brass backplate crowned with a small pine cone finial and finished with a shaped drop at the base. Two scrolled arms sweep out and turn up to wide drip pans shaped like open petals, holding candle sleeves with moulded drips. Above, two fine curling stems rise and arch over, each carrying a glass drop. Further drops and pressed-glass rosettes hang from the arms and backplate, so the light glints from every side.
