Antique Bronze Candlestick Pair, Crisscross Diamond Texture — French, Circa 1910s

By the early twentieth century, French bronze workshops were still turning out candlesticks in forms that had barely changed in a century — a weighted round base, a turned column, a drip pan, and a socket to hold the candle steady. What varied was the surface treatment, and a crisscross diamond texture pressed into the stem was one of the more distinctive finishes: it caught candlelight at dozens of small angles rather than reflecting it as a single sheet, giving the bronze more life in a dim room than a plain polished column ever could.

This pair, French, circa 1910s, carries that crisscross texture along the full length of each column, bordered above and below by plain turned bands. Note how the diamond pattern is cut with consistent depth and spacing across both candlesticks, matching from one to the other — the mark of a mold-cast pair produced together rather than two mismatched pieces later united as a set. The base and capital both carry the same fine banding, tying the whole form together. The bronze has settled into a rich, even patina.
