Antique French Animalier Bronze Hunting Dog by Pierre-Jules Mene, Signed P.J. Mene, Pointer with Collar on Naturalistic Base
Head turned toward you and one forepaw stepping forward, this hunting dog pauses on a patch of rough ground, alert and ready to move off at a word. His ribs show beneath a lean coat, his soft ears frame a gentle, questioning face, and a slim collar circles his neck. Beside him lies a cut branch, a small detail of the field. Pierre-Jules Mêne was one of the founders of the French animalier school, celebrated in the 19th century for his true-to-life dogs and horses, and his name is cast into the front of the base. A rich dark brown patina, warming to copper on the ribs and haunches, brings the muscles to life. Small and weighty, it’s a classic piece for a desk or a library shelf, and a fine gift for a hunter or dog lover.
