Vintage Jacquard Woven Wall Tapestry, Louis XVI Style Gallant Garden Scene with Dancing Couple and Dog, Rose Border, 63 x 50 in
A gentleman in a rust-red frock coat and tricorn hat raises his cane with a flourish, as a lady in a flowered sky-blue gown and a companion in coral and gold skip along the garden path toward him. Their skirts swirl and their bonnets tilt in the breeze. Behind them, ladies chat on a garden bench, an elegant château rises beyond the trees, and a little dog bounds across the grass. The whole romantic scene is in the playful spirit of 18th-century French painting, woven in warm tones of honey, rose, sage and powder blue. It’s framed by a wide border of garlanded pink roses and gilded scrolls. At over five feet wide, with metal hanging fixings already on the back, it makes a generous focal point above a sofa, a bed or a fireplace.
