Antique Napoleon III Japonisme Bronze Figure Group, Two Bearers Carrying a Lady with Fan in a Hammock Litter, 19th Century
Two bearers walk in step, a long pole resting on their shoulders. Slung between them in a hammock-style litter, a lady reclines at ease with a fan in her lap. Each carries a walking staff, and their faces tilt upward with effort while hers is calm and serene. It’s a scene drawn from the travel litters of old Japan, cast in miniature at the height of the Japonisme craze that swept Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The details are wonderfully observed: the folds of her kimono, the knotted ropes tying the litter to the pole, and their bare feet. The bronze has a soft, golden patina with hints of green. It’s a delightful small curiosity for a cabinet, a desk or a bookshelf.
Condition: Good Antique Condition, with a natural, untouched patina and light wear consistent with age, as pictured.
