Antique Oak Barograph, Brass Mechanism with Chart Drum — English, 1930s
The barograph traces its origins to the meteorological instruments of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, when a household or ship's study wanted more than a single barometer reading — it wanted a continuous record of the atmosphere's rise and fall over days at a time.
An aneroid capsule stack, sensitive to the smallest pressure changes, drove a brass arm that traced a line onto a slowly rotating paper drum, turning invisible weather into a visible, unbroken chart.
This example, English, 1930s, houses that mechanism in a substantial oak case with a moulded cornice and stepped bracket feet, glazed on the front so the full works stay visible at rest. Inside, the recording arm still rests against its cylindrical drum, wrapped in an aged paper chart with its original grid lines intact.
Note how the brass arm's linkage sits in overlapping layers rather than a single flat bar — the stacked capsule mechanism that let earlier barographs register pressure changes far smaller than any single dial could show, a level of mechanical refinement rarely built into instruments once cheaper aneroid barometers became common. The brass throughout carries a warm, even patina.
Whoever kept this instrument recording before you kept it well. The oak case shows honest, age-consistent wear, and the brass mechanism retains excellent patina; the chart drum and its original paper chart remain in place. Sold as a display piece rather than a working instrument, it is ready for a study, library, or desk.
