Art Deco Lady Lamp, Walther and Sohne Attributed Blue Frosted Glass Figural Lamp with Globe — German, 1930s
In the 1930s, the German pressed-glass houses — Walther & Söhne of Saxony chief among them — found their signature in the figural lamp: a young woman in frosted, colour-saturated glass, seated or kneeling, holding the light above her. Pressed rather than blown, the figures made the boudoir lamp of the Deco dream affordable across Europe, and the deep matte blues were the most coveted of the palette — the colour of evening these lamps were built to inhabit.
This lamp is attributed to Walther & Söhne, German, 1930s: a young woman in satin-frosted deep blue glass, seated on a faceted rocky base with her legs drawn to one side, both arms raised to support the fitting above her head, crowned by a globe shade of white opal glass on a brass gallery. Look at the surface where the frosting thins — over the knee, along the raised arm — and the blue deepens from powder to sapphire as the glass thickens: pressed satin glass carries its colour in its body, and the shifting depth is the mark of the real 1930s material. The figure carries a small chip to the back, stated plainly and photographed. The lamp is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.
The blue figure is otherwise sound with its satin finish even, and the opal globe is intact; the chip is shown honestly in the photographs. Whoever lit their evenings by this lady before you kept her whole for nearly a century's worth of nights. She belongs on a dressing table, a bedside, or a shelf where the evening light can reach her.
