Baroque Style Tilting Vanity Mirror, Oval Glass in Pierced Scrolling Patinated Metal Frame on Pedestal Base, 46 cm
The dressing table has always been a place of small rituals, and the mirror is its centrepiece. European makers gave table mirrors the same rich ornament as grand wall mirrors, so that even a moment of getting ready felt a little special. Scrolling Baroque and Rococo frames were especially loved for their sense of movement and luxury.
This table mirror is in that Baroque style. An oval mirror glass is set in a pierced frame of scrolling metal, with curling C-shapes and leafy forms running all the way around. The frame is held between two supports on a sculpted pedestal base, also covered in scrolls. A knob on one side tightens the pivot, so the mirror can be tilted and held at any angle, a feature borrowed from the tall standing mirrors of grand bedrooms. The metal has a warm, patinated finish that brings out the depth of the ornament.
The mirror is in good condition, as pictured. It makes a romantic centrepiece on a dressing table, a chest of drawers or a bathroom vanity.
In short, this is a Baroque style tilting table mirror with an oval glass in a pierced, scrolling patinated metal frame on a pedestal base. It is 46 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
