Before the table lamp existed, France had already perfected its anatomy in the candlestick: a spreading foot for stability, a column for height, ornament wherever the eye would rest. When electricity arrived, the grandest sticks — the ones with sculpted tripod bases and fluted columns, made for chapels and mantels — were the first to be converted, because they already stood at lamp height and carried themselves like furniture. A tôle shade in deep green completed the promotion: candlestick below, working light above.

This lamp is French in style, built on a candlestick base of gilt metal: three scrolled feet cast with foliate ornament rise to a platform, from which a knopped and fluted column climbs to the fitting, the whole crowned by a wide oval shade of tôle painted deep green, pale within to throw the light down. Look at the base from a low angle — the tripod of scrolls is where the caster spent the work, deep-cast leaves rolling into feet, built to be seen at table height the way a candlestick always was. The shade carries the marks of its years openly. The lamp is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.

The gilt base is sound with age-consistent wear, and the tôle shade shows scuffs and rubbing to its green paint, honest and unhidden, as the photographs show. Whoever raised this candlestick to lamplight before you kept it in service. It suits a desk, a library table, or a hallway console.
