Framed English Hunting Scene Print, Huntsmen in Red Coats Gathered at a Country Inn with Hounds, Wood Frame, 51 × 41 cm
In the English hunting tradition, the day often began at a country inn. Riders, hounds and onlookers gathered in the inn yard for “the meet,” exchanging news while the horses were readied. Before setting off, each rider was handed a stirrup cup, a small drink passed up to someone already in the saddle. These gatherings, full of colour and conversation, became a favourite subject for English genre painters.
This framed print shows just such a morning. In the timbered courtyard of an old inn, a group of huntsmen in scarlet coats sit around a small table with a newspaper spread before them, tankards to hand. A clergyman in black sits among them, and another huntsman stands to one side, pipe in mouth. Through the archway behind, riders and a pack of hounds wait on the road, ready for the signal to leave. The print is set in a mat with a pale duck-egg blue band and fine gold lines, inside a deep brown wood frame, behind glass.
The print is in very good condition. The paper lies flat, and the colours are fresh. A hanging fixture is already fitted on the back. It suits a study, a library, a dining room or any room with an English country character.
In short, this is a framed print of an English hunting scene, with huntsmen gathered at a country inn and hounds waiting beyond, in a wood frame with a blue and gold mat. It measures 51 × 41 cm and is exactly as pictured.
