Louis XIV Style Vase Print, Versailles Bassin de Neptune — Framed Vintage Lithograph, 1960s

Read the small type at the bottom of this plate and it names its own subject: Vase de pierre du bassin de Neptune, the stone urn from the Neptune fountain at Versailles. Nineteenth-century pattern books like the "Motifs Historiques" series this plate comes from existed for exactly this purpose — architects, decorators, and craftsmen needed a way to study ornament without traveling to the palace itself, so publishers sent illustrators to draw the great fountains, urns, and stonework and printed the results as reference plates, captioned and labeled like a specimen.

The urn itself carries the scrolled handles and carved mask below the rim typical of Louis XIV garden ornament, set on a stepped stone base that the plate renders in the same careful line work as the vase above it — the kind of detail that made these plates useful as working references rather than just decoration. The print is presented under a warm cream mat with a patterned green inner border and a gold fillet, all held in a dark wood frame with a gilt inner edge.

The mat and frame have been kept in the pairing they were assembled in, with the age showing only as the light, even toning expected of a vintage print rather than anything that competes with the image itself. At just under 70 cm tall, it holds its own as a single statement piece above a console or within a grouped wall arrangement.
