Midcentury Bronze-Toned Head Sculptures, Pair, Hagenauer Style, 1950s

The Vienna workshop run by Karl Hagenauer became known through the early-to-mid twentieth century for a particular formal approach to the human figure: elongated necks, simplified planes, and a smooth, unbroken line from crown to shoulder rather than naturalistic detail at every point. This pair works in that same visual language — two profile busts, facing each other, each reduced to essential form rather than built up with individualized features.

The two heads are cast with distinct surface treatments: one carries a raised, beaded texture across the hairline, the other a smoother, close-cropped finish, giving the pair a matched-but-not-identical relationship rather than two copies of the same mold. Each stands on its own small rectangular base. The metal carries a bronze-toned patina with visible variation across the surface, from darker brown to lighter gold tones.

The patina shows the expected unevenness of age rather than damage, and both pieces stand securely on their bases. At just 14 cm tall and 3 cm wide each, they suit a shelf, desk corner, or small display grouping rather than a larger sculptural setting.
