Pair of French Gilt Bronze Double Arm Wall Sconces, Mid-Century — France, circa 1950
The double-arm wall sconce is one of those forms that French foundries never stopped making well. From the Louis XV originals of the 1740s through to the mid-twentieth century, the s-scroll arm, the beaded backplate, and the shallow bobèche cup remained in continuous production — not because craftsmen lacked imagination, but because the proportions were correct and the rooms they lit had not fundamentally changed. A pair hung either side of a fireplace or mirror still does exactly what it did two hundred and fifty years ago: it holds the eye at conversation height and fills the wall with warm, directed light.
This pair is French, circa 1950, cast in gilt bronze with the confidence of a foundry working in a tradition it understood thoroughly. Each sconce is built around a circular beaded backplate from which two generous s-scroll arms sweep outward in a single unbroken curve, their surfaces chased with a beaded rib that runs the full length of the arm — note how the bead detail begins at the backplate, follows the arm's curve without interruption, and resolves into the bobèche cup at the tip, the mark of a casting made from a single considered design rather than assembled components. The gilt has a warm, even tone across both sconces, consistent with careful indoor use over several decades.
Whoever lit their rooms with these before you kept them in fine order — no damage, no repairs, the gilt sound across both. The wax candle sleeves will be replaced before dispatch. Ready to hang either side of a mirror, a fireplace, or a pair of doorways.
