Pair of French Gilt Bronze Double Arm Wall Sconces, Louis XV Style — France, Early 20th Century
The Louis XV wall sconce is the most enduring form French decorative lighting ever produced. Developed in the middle of the eighteenth century, when the rococo interior was at its height, it solved the problem of wall lighting with a particular elegance: arms that curved outward like branches from a central body, the whole composition rising from a pendant drop at the base and finishing at the top with a small finial — sphere, urn, or flame. The foundries of Paris kept this form in continuous production for nearly two centuries, because rooms kept asking for it and it kept being right.
This pair is French, early twentieth century, cast in solid gilt bronze in the Louis XV manner. Each sconce is built around a central body from which two generous scroll arms sweep outward, their surfaces chased with acanthus leaf ornament that opens as the arm curves — the detail that gives Louis XV bronzework its sense of growth rather than construction. At the junction of the arms, a cast foliate spray sits at the centre; above, a turned sphere finial caps the body; below, a pendant drop finishes the composition. Note how the arms curl inward at the tips into small scrolled returns before meeting the bobèche — the controlled ending of a curve that a lesser casting would simply terminate. The gilt is warm and even across both sconces. The source notes the two bases differ slightly in their terminal detail — a minor variation that confirms these are period castings rather than modern reproductions, which would be identical.
Whoever lit their rooms with these before you kept them in very good order. Both sconces are sound and ready to hang. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use.
