Pair of French Gilt Bronze Double Arm Wall Sconces, Neoclassical Urn Form — France, Early 20th Century
The urn-form wall sconce belongs to the neoclassical tradition that France never entirely abandoned. From the Louis XVI period onward, the inverted trumpet or vase body — fluted, acanthus-chased, topped with a finial — became the most authoritative backplate form a French foundry could offer: architectural in its proportions, restrained in its ornament, and scaled to fill a wall without overwhelming it. The best examples from the early twentieth century were cast with the same discipline as their eighteenth-century predecessors, because the foundries that made them were working from the same patterns.
This pair is French, early twentieth century, each sconce built around a substantial inverted trumpet body in gilt bronze, its surface chased with vertical acanthus panels rising to a beaded collar and a faceted urn finial at the crown. Two scroll arms sweep outward from the base of the body, each chased along its upper face with a bead-and-reel border and terminating in a fluted trumpet socket that mirrors the main body in miniature — the repetition of the trumpet form at arm and body both, the detail that gives the piece its compositional logic. The gilt has a warm, even brass tone across both sconces, consistent with careful indoor use.
Whoever lit their rooms with these before you kept the bronzes in good general order. Both sconces are sound and well matched. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use — the socket fittings will be secured and checked before dispatch.
They arrive professionally packed and fully insured. All duties and import charges are our responsibility — you pay nothing beyond the listed price. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
