Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Wall Sconces, Bronze-Tone Patinated Metal with Laurel Wreath and Flame Finial

A laurel wreath and a carved flame crown each of these sconces, symbols taken from ancient Rome and set against the wall like a small monument. Two curved arms reach out on either side, ready to light a room from both sides.

Each sconce has a tall, narrow back plate topped with a flame finial and ending in a tapered drop. A ring of laurel leaves circles the upper plate. Two curved arms come out from below, each holding a leaf-shaped drip pan and a turned cup. The metal is a dark bronze tone. The laurel wreath was a sign of victory and honour in ancient Rome. Designers in the reign of Louis XVI brought it back in the 1770s and 1780s, when classical shapes became the height of fashion.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with a darkened patina and surface dirt that will be cleaned gently in our workshop. They have already lit many evenings, and they're ready for many more. A pair suits a hallway, either side of a mirror or a fireplace, or a dining room wall.
