Antique Pair of Restauration Style Small "Ragot" Candlesticks, Brass-Tone Metal with Chased Diaper Pattern, Early 19th Century

Short and sturdy, these two little candlesticks are covered in fine crisscross patterns that shimmer as the light moves across them.

Each candlestick has a baluster-shaped shaft in brass-tone metal, chased with a fine diaper (crisscross) pattern between narrow decorated bands. A flared candle cup with a patterned rim sits on top. The shaft stands on a round, stepped, domed base edged with a chased, knurled border. In French, small low candlesticks like these are called "ragots". The word describes something short and sturdy, and they were made for dressing tables, writing desks and bedside tables.

The candlesticks are in very good antique condition. They've been kept carefully for two centuries, and they deserve the same care in their next home. They suit a dressing table, a bedside table, a desk or a mantelpiece.
