The neoclassical candlestick is architecture in miniature: a column and an urn — the whole vocabulary of a temple — shrunk to hold one candle. In the Louis XVI taste, makers dressed these small columns in the full ornament of the style: beaded rims, collars of stamped laurel and acanthus, and little toupie feet lifting a square plinth off the table. At this scale they were made for the intimate surfaces of a house — a dressing table, a writing desk, a mantel end.
This candlestick is in the French Louis XVI taste, a rose marble column mounted in gilt metal. The urn-form nozzle sits above a foliate collar, the column rises from a gilt leaf ring, and the square marble plinth stands on four turned toupie feet with a beaded gallery between them. Look at the raised edges of the leaves and beading, where the gilding has thinned to warm metal — gilt work worn by generations of handling thins exactly on these high points, while the recesses keep their colour, a pattern uniform modern gilding never shows. It is sold as a single candlestick.
The marble is sound and richly veined, and there is a small split to the metal wall inside the candle cup, visible only when looking down into the nozzle — shown plainly in the photographs, which hide nothing of the surface. Whoever lit their candles here before you kept this piece well. It is at home on a mantel, a dressing table, or a desk.
