Signed Art Glass Vase, Aconito Guyot Biot, Iridescent Blue on Rose — France, 1988
Biot, the hilltop village above the Côte d'Azur, became in the second half of the twentieth century one of the most important centres of studio glassmaking in France. Where Murano had centuries of tradition and Bohemia had industrial scale, Biot offered something different: small workshops, artists working directly at the furnace, and a commitment to the handmade object as both sculpture and vessel. The technique — pâte de verre worked hot, with applied and trailed decoration fused into the surface rather than painted onto it — produced effects that no two pieces could exactly repeat, which is the point.
This vase is French, dated 1988, signed Aconito and Guyot Biot, and it is a confident piece of work. The body is a full globe in rose-amber glass with a matte, slightly granular surface — the texture that results from working the gather at a particular temperature, distinct from the high polish of blown glass and giving the colour a depth that shifts between coral, rose, and amber depending on the light. Across this surface, iridescent blue-violet trails have been applied hot and worked into loops, nodes, and free-form lines that cross and recross the globe without repeating — note how the heavier nodes anchor the composition at intervals while the finer trails move freely between them, the discipline of an artist who understood that decoration at this scale must have rhythm or it becomes noise. The iridescent finish on the trails shifts between blue, violet, and silver as the light moves around the piece.
Whoever kept this vase before you gave it a good life — no chips, no cracks, the surface sound throughout. It sits well on a mantelpiece, a console, or a windowsill where the light can reach it from behind.
