The reverse of the stretcher carries its own quiet documentation: the street name written by hand, a habit many painters kept so a canvas wouldn't lose its subject once it left the studio. Here that inscription names Rue Quincampoix, one of the oldest streets in the Marais, and the composition on the front bears it out — a narrow cobbled corridor lined with market stalls and café awnings, receding into a pale Parisian sky.

The painting works in an impressionist style, built from visible, confident brushwork rather than photographic detail — a figure in blue carrying flowers toward the viewer, market vendors and browsers rendered as gesture and color rather than individually detailed faces.
