Tall Crystal Table Lamp, Stacked Faceted Glass and Brass Column Lamp — French, 1950s

The stacked crystal lamp was the French mid-century's way of bringing chandelier logic down to the tabletop — and the taller the stack, the grander the effect. Elements of faceted glass threaded on a central rod, each shape cutting the light differently, produced a column that never looks the same twice in a day: every window, lamp, and passing headlight in the room is caught, split, and handed back.

This lamp is French, from the 1950s, and stands over half a metre — a tall example of the type: a column of faceted clear glass elements in alternating forms — diamonds points-up and points-down, a flattened disc, a fully faceted sphere at the heart — divided by slender brass rings, rising from a wide faceted glass dome on a brass foot to a long brass neck and the socket. Look at how the forms alternate down the stack — each element's facets are cut at different angles from its neighbours', so the column scatters light in every direction at once rather than one repeating pattern, the reason a stacked lamp outshines a single-piece one. The two lowest glass elements carry some small chips, stated plainly and shown in the photographs. The lamp is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.

The glass is otherwise bright and the brass evenly mellowed; the chips sit low on the lamp, where the eye rarely goes but honesty must. Whoever kept this column catching the light before you kept it standing tall. It suits a console, a dresser, or a generous bedside table.
