In the 1930s, French lamp makers loved to set a bird in flight above a single glowing shade. Art Deco designers favoured swallows, parakeets and birds of paradise, drawn as sleek, streamlined silhouettes in polished metal. Chrome had only recently come into decorative use, and it gave these lamps a bright, modern shine that suited the new apartments of the period, as well as the age of fast cars and ocean liners.

This lamp, attributed to around 1935, captures that spirit. A flat, solid metal stem rises from a spray of tall reeds and grasses, then bends gracefully over at the top. A bird with outstretched wings has just landed there, its long feathered tail trailing down the stem. From beneath the bird hangs a stepped, beehive-shaped glass shade in a soft almond-green frosted finish, circled by a band of gilding. The polished chrome-finish metal stands on a square block of black marble veined with gold and white. Because the stem is flat and solid, the cord runs neatly along one side of the decoration.

The lamp is in good condition, with tiny chips to the edges of the marble base. The glass shade is in good condition. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It weighs over 1.4 kg and makes a charming accent light for a desk, a nightstand or a shelf.
