Tôle is thin sheet iron, cut, hammered into shape and gilded. In mid-twentieth-century Italy, especially around Florence, workshops used it to make light, airy wall lights in the form of sprays of leaves. They were often hung with glass drops in soft colours, so that the gilded foliage seemed to bear fruit. The style became a favourite of Hollywood Regency decorators and remains much loved for its warmth and informal charm.

This pair of candle sconces is in that Florentine tradition. Each is a tall spray of long, pointed gilt leaves, springing upward from a gathered bow at the base and fanning out in layers. From the lower leaves, two curving arms reach out to each side, ending in turned wooden drip pans that hold the candle cups. Amber glass drops hang throughout the leaves and beneath the arms. Each is a round, honey-coloured bead suspended on a slender stem of yellow glass and hooked on with a small clear bead. The gilding has worn to a warm, softly distressed finish.

The sconces need some attention. A few glass drops are missing, one candle cup is detached, and the gilding would benefit from cleaning, as pictured. They are designed for candles and are not electrified. Hung in a dining room, a conservatory or a bedroom, with the light shining through the amber drops, they give a warm, golden glow.
