The cocktail hour moved from the hotel bar into the home in the middle of the last century, and with it came a new kind of object. Hosts wanted their drinks tray to look as polished as any sideboard, so barware makers turned practical tools into small pieces of design, arranged on stands that could be left out on display between parties.
This set gathers four bar tools on a tree-style stand. A slender central column rises from a round wooden base to a cross of four arms, each holding one tool, and is topped with a large ring for carrying. The tools hang by their long tapered handles. Among them are a cup-shaped measure, known to bartenders as a jigger, which lets a drink be poured to the same proportion every time, along with a long bar spoon and a slotted spoon. The warm brass of the tools and column contrasts with the dark wood of the base, and the whole set has the bright, celebratory look of mid-century entertaining.
The set reaches us in good condition, with some fading to the finish on the tool handles and on the stand, and a small mark on the top ring. These are the honest signs of a set that has been part of someone's gatherings, and it is ready to take its place in another home.
