Vintage Bronze Warwick Vase Reduction, Grand Tour Urn with Bacchic Masks and Knotted Vine Handles, Dark Patina, Library Decor
A row of bearded faces looks out from the belly of this urn, each one full of character: a scowling elder with a curling moustache, a bearded figure in a soft cap, and a youthful satyr with windswept hair. They’re the companions of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, set among drapery and a panther skin. Above them, a band of vine leaves and grapes hangs beneath a heavy egg-and-dart rim. On each side, two stems of twisted vine loop out and knot together to form the handles. The urn rises from a fluted, gadrooned foot. The deep chocolate-brown patina is rubbed to warm gold on the beards, brows and leaf tips, bringing every face to life. It’s a small reduction of the celebrated Roman Warwick Vase, one of the antiquities most admired on the Grand Tour, and lovely on a desk or a library shelf.
