The convex mirror has a clever history. In grand European dining rooms, a butler could glance at one round, curved mirror and see the whole table at once, knowing exactly when a guest needed their glass refilled. That is why it is called a butler’s mirror. Because the curved glass gathers a whole room into a small circle, it was also thought to bring light and good luck, and the French call it a miroir de sorcière, a witch’s mirror.
This vintage convex mirror is a charming example. The round curved glass sits in a slim gold-tone frame with a rope-twist border. At the top, a small ribbon bow forms the crest, a classic decorative motif borrowed from the Louis XVI style. The mirror hangs from a fine chain, so it can be hung from a single hook. The curved glass reflects a wide view of the room in miniature, adding depth and light to any wall.
The mirror is in good condition. It looks lovely in a hallway, above a console or in a dining room, where it can reflect light and gather the room into its curve.
