Vintage Florentine Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconce with RosesLeaves and Faceted Glass Drops, Two Lights, 40 cm

The rose has been the best-loved flower in European art for centuries. Painters placed it in still lifes and portraits, and decorators carved, cast and gilded it onto furniture, mirrors and lights. In Italian gilt-metal lighting especially, roses were shaped petal by petal and set among leaves, so that a wall light could become a small, permanent bouquet.

This wall sconce is in that Florentine style. A tall crest of gilt leaves, with an open flower at its heart, rises above a central scrolled cartouche. From the centre, two curved arms sweep out to hold leaf-edged bobèches with gilt cups for the bulbs. Between and below the arms, gilt roses grow on fine stems: two open blooms near the top, more at the base, and a pair of small roses hanging from the arms. Faceted glass drops hang beneath the roses like drops of dew. In still-life painting, an open rose was a gentle reminder that beauty does not last forever, but in gilt metal these blooms will stay open.

The sconce is in good overall condition. Its petals and drops are delicate, so we will pack it as carefully as it was made. It makes a romantic light above a dressing table, or beside a mirror in a bedroom.

In short, this is a vintage Florentine style wall sconce in gilt metal, with roses, leaves, faceted glass drops and two lights. It measures 35 × 40 × 15 cm and is exactly as pictured.
