In 1925, Paris held the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Its French name, Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, later gave the style its name: Art Deco. French designers had been moving away from the flowing curves of Art Nouveau for some years, towards clean geometry, repeated lines and a polished, machine-age finish. Even everyday tableware took on the new look.
This small round dish, attributed to c. 1910–1930, shows the beginnings of that shift. The wide rim is turned with a series of stepped concentric rings that run down to a plain, flat well. Concentric rings were one of the simplest devices of early Art Deco. They give a plain circle rhythm and depth, and catch the light ring by ring. The silver-tone surface has the soft shine of a piece that has been used and cared for over the years.
The dish is in good condition, with no dents or cracks and fine, shallow marks on the surface from age and use. We are glad to pass it on and see it put to good use again. It makes a neat catch-all on a dressing table, a soap dish beside a basin, or a coaster for a wine bottle on a bar cart.
