Vintage Louis XV Rocaille Style Wall Sconce, Attributed Mid-20th Century, Gilt Metal Acanthus Scrolls, Two Candle Lights, 35 cm
The acanthus is a Mediterranean plant with large, deeply cut leaves, and it has been one of the most important ornaments in European art since ancient Greece. Designers of the Louis XV period gave it new life, letting its leaves curl, twist and sweep across their work. In the Rocaille style, a light fitting could look as though it were growing straight out of the wall.
This wall sconce, attributed to the mid-twentieth century, is in that Louis XV Rocaille style. Its whole body is made of swirling acanthus leaves, rising from a pointed tip below and curling into a large scroll at the centre. Two arms grow out of the foliage, one to each side, each ending in a petal-shaped bobèche and a leafy candle cup with a candle-style sleeve. The design is deliberately asymmetrical, giving it a lively sense of movement. The candle sleeves can be removed, which makes rewiring straightforward.
The sconce is in very good condition, with a warm gilt finish. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It brings classic French charm to a bedroom, a salon or an entrance hall.
In short, this is a vintage Louis XV Rocaille style wall sconce in gilt metal, with acanthus scrolls and two candle lights. It is attributed to the mid-twentieth century, 35 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
