Vintage Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconce, Rocaille Scrolls with Two Candle Lights, 38 cm
Before electric light, the wall sconce held real candles, and the wax would run down their sides as they burned. When sconces were electrified, makers kept the memory of that candlelight alive with candle-style sleeves, often moulded with drips of “wax.” It is a small detail, but it gives an electric light the warmth and charm of the eighteenth century.
This wall sconce is in the Louis XV style. Its body is a flowing column of gilt metal scrolls and acanthus leaves, curling up from a pointed leafy tip below to a scrolled top. Two arms sweep out from the centre, each ending in a leaf-edged bobèche with a drip-effect candle sleeve. The design is asymmetrical, in the true Rocaille manner, which gives it a lively sense of movement. The gilt finish is warm and bright.
The sconce is in very good condition. It comes with two bulbs. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It brings classic French charm to a bedroom, a salon, a hallway or a dining room.
In short, this is a vintage Louis XV style wall sconce in gilt metal, with Rocaille scrolls and two candle lights. It is 38 cm tall including the bulbs, weighs 836 g, and is exactly as pictured.
