Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Wall Sconces, Tapering Fluted Backplates with Rope-Twist Arms, Two Lights Each, 25 cm
The Louis XVI style took its inspiration from the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Designers borrowed columns, pilasters and classical borders and shrank them down to fit furniture and light fittings. The result was a calm, upright elegance that is still recognised today as the height of French refinement.
This pair of wall sconces shows that classical influence clearly. Each one has a long, tapering backplate shaped like a pilaster, the flat decorative column set into the walls of classical buildings. Its face is finely fluted, crowned with a leafy crest at the top and finished with a small acorn-shaped drop below. Two arms with a twisted-rope moulding curve out and up from the backplate, ending in fluted cups that hold the lights. The brass-tone metal has a warm patina from age.
The sconces are in very good condition, with the patina of age and a little verdigris on one of the lower drops. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a dining room, a hallway or a classic salon, especially either side of a mirror or a fireplace.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XVI style wall sconces, with tapering fluted backplates, rope-twist arms and two lights each. Each is 25 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
