In the nineteenth century, a fine wooden box was a personal treasure. It held letters, jewelry, keepsakes and small valuables, and its lock kept them private. Cabinetmakers made these boxes from rich woods such as mahogany, and decorated them with inlays of contrasting wood to give a plain shape a touch of elegance.

This mahogany box is attributed to the late nineteenth century. It is a simple rectangle with a lid that closes neatly over the base. At the centre of the lid sits an oval inlay of pale wood, cut in a fan pattern. This motif is called a patera, after the shallow dish used in ancient Roman offerings, and it was a favourite of classical furniture makers. A small keyhole sits on the front, and the box comes with its key.

The box is in very good condition for its age. The mahogany has a warm, deep patina, with a few light marks on the lid. The plain interior is clean and sound. It makes a lovely jewelry box or keepsake box on a dressing table, desk or bookshelf.
