Vintage Mirror-Image Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Wall SconcesAttributed 19th Century, Gilt Metal Acanthus, Two Candle Lights Each

In the middle of the nineteenth century, French taste turned back a hundred years. A new class of city families, furnishing their apartments in Paris and the growing resort towns, fell in love with the curving ornament of Louis XV’s reign. Makers answered with a wave of Rococo revival furniture and lighting, and the scrolls and shells of the eighteenth century found a whole new audience.

This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the nineteenth century, is in that Louis XV Rocaille style. Each one rises from a pointed leafy tail into a tall, curling flame of acanthus leaves. Two slender arms branch out with their own small scrolls and leaves, ending in petal-edged bobèches with leafy candle cups and drip-effect sleeves. The two sconces were designed en pendant, the French term for a pair made as matching opposites, so that each one curves the other way and they mirror one another across a mirror, a doorway or a fireplace.

The gilt surface has dulled with time and would benefit from a gentle clean, which will bring back its warmth. We are glad to keep them together as the pair they were made to be. They are at their best framing a tall mirror in a salon, or either side of a fireplace.

In short, this is a vintage mirror-image pair of Louis XV Rocaille style wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus scrolls and two candle lights each. They are attributed to the nineteenth century, each 36 cm tall, and exactly as pictured.
