Vintage Pair of Brass Hall Lanterns, Attributed 1950s–60s, Directoire Style Glass Cylinder Pendants, Two Lights Each, 34 cm
The hall lantern has lit the entrances of European homes for centuries. It began as a practical solution: a candle inside a glass case, hung from the ceiling, safe from the draughts that blew in every time the front door opened. The idea outlived the candle, and the glass lantern remains the classic light for a hallway, a staircase or a grand entrance.
This pair of hanging lanterns is attributed to the 1950s–60s and is in the Directoire style, the restrained neoclassical taste of late eighteenth-century France. Each lantern is a clear glass cylinder held in a slim patinated brass frame, with vertical bars and plain bands at the top and bottom. Inside, two candle-style lights stand on a small round dish, and a neat brass drop finishes the base. Each lantern hangs from a curved brass hook, and both come with their ceiling canopies.
The lanterns are in very good condition. The glass cylinders are intact, with no cracks or chips, and the brass has a warm patina. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to install. They bring classic character to an entrance hall, a stairwell or a long corridor.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Directoire style hall lanterns in patinated brass with clear glass cylinders and two lights each, attributed to the 1950s–60s. Each lantern is 34 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
