Vintage Pair of Brass Wall SconcesAttributed 1950s–60s, Tall Pressed Glass Shades on Black Wall Plates with Rosettes, 34 cm

The 1950s and 1960s were a golden age for the European wall light. Designers stripped the sconce down to a few elegant elements: a small wall plate, a slender stem and a tall glass shade, like a flame held up against the wall. The results were light, graceful and modern, and they still bring a quiet glamour to a room.

This pair of wall sconces is attributed to the 1950s–60s. Each one has a small black rectangular wall plate decorated with a gilt rosette. The rosette is a stylized flower borrowed from classical architecture, where it has decorated ceilings and doorways since ancient times. A slender brass stem curves up past the rosette, finishing in a fine point below, and holds a pale gold cup at the top. Inside sits a tall, tapered shade of frosted pressed glass, patterned with rows of oval reliefs that catch the light.

The sconces are in untouched vintage condition. The glass shades are intact, and the brass is slightly pitted and would benefit from cleaning. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They look best as a pair, flanking a bed, a mirror or a fireplace.

In short, this is a vintage pair of brass wall sconces with tall pressed glass shades on black wall plates with gilt rosettes, attributed to the 1950s–60s. Each is 34 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
