Vintage Pair of Gilt Metal Curtain Tiebacks with Winged Lion HeadsScrolled Holdback Arms, 24 cm

The winged lion has guarded European doorways, fountains and coats of arms for centuries. It is the emblem of Saint Mark and of the city of Venice, where it still looks out from columns and palace facades, and decorators across Europe borrowed it as a symbol of strength and protection. On a pair of curtain tiebacks, it stands watch on either side of a window.

This pair of curtain tiebacks, known in French as embrasses, is built around that figure. Each has a narrow, decorated wall plate, from which a slender arm curls outward in a series of open scrolls. At the end of the arm, a winged lion’s head looks forward, its wings swept back along its neck. The curtain rests within the curve of the arm, held back in soft folds and framed by the gilt scrolls. The gilt finish has a pleasing patina that deepens in the recesses of the carving.

The tiebacks are in good condition, with a mellow patina. They will hold back a pair of curtains with real character, or they can be used as striking decorative hooks for a robe, a scarf or a tasselled key.
