Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Wall Sconces, Gold-Tone Metal with Draped Urns, Pierced Fluted Shafts and Acanthus Arms

A covered urn hung with a fabric swag sits on top of each sconce, so the pair looks like two small classical monuments set against the wall. Below the urn, two scrolled arms reach out to hold the light.

Each sconce has a tall central shaft in gold-tone metal. At the top is a lidded urn with a draped swag and a pointed finial. Below it, an open, fluted section frames a hanging chain of husks, finished with a leafy drop. Two scrolled arms, trimmed with acanthus leaves, curve out to hold round drip pans and leafy cups. Urns draped with cloth became fashionable in the 1760s and 1770s, after the digs at Pompeii and Herculaneum showed Europe the decoration of ancient Rome. They soon became a sign of Louis XVI style.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with their original mellow patina. One sconce has a small hole, shown in the photos, which doesn't affect its strength. They reach us unwired, and we electrify them in our workshop before dispatch. We pass them on in the same good order we keep them in. A pair suits a hallway, a dining room, or either side of a fireplace or mirror.
