Vintage Rocaille Style Giltwood and Gilt Stucco Mirror, Shell Crest and Scrolls, Shaped Frame on Small Feet, 42 cm
In the nineteenth century, gilt mirrors became affordable for many more homes, thanks to a clever technique. Instead of carving every scroll by hand, framemakers pressed a soft paste of plaster or chalk, known as stucco or “compo,” into carved moulds, then applied the crisp ornaments to a wooden frame before gilding the whole surface. The result looked like fine carving, and it helped fill the apartments of Napoléon III’s Paris with gleaming mirrors.
This mirror shows that technique in a Rocaille design. Its shaped frame curves in at the sides and rises at the top into a large scallop shell framed by scrolls, with a smaller cartouche hanging beneath it over the glass. The upper corners swirl into deep volutes, and the base sweeps up into a leafy scroll between two small feet. The gilding has softened with use, giving it a warm patina with hints of the base colour showing through in places.
The mirror is in good condition for its age. There are some spots on the mirror’s silvering, visible in the photos. Its small feet mean it can either hang on a wall or stand on a mantel or chest of drawers, and it suits an entrance, a salon or a bedroom.
In short, this is a vintage Rocaille style mirror in giltwood and gilt stucco, with a shell crest, scrolls and small feet. It measures about 42 × 34 cm, weighs 1.64 kg, and is exactly as pictured.
