Vintage Rococo Style Two-Light Wall Sconce, Scrolled Cartouche Backplate with Acanthus Arms, 40 cm
Classic cast-metal wall lights were built to last, and to be mended. Rather than being glued or welded, their parts were cast separately and then assembled with threaded rods, nuts and pins. A loose joint or a worn pin could be renewed by a skilled hand, which is one reason so many of these lights are still in use a century or more after they were made.
This wall sconce is built in just that way. Its tall backplate is a scrolled cartouche, shaped with leaves and curls, rising to a leafy crest and tapering to a small drop below. At its centre sits a rounded, urn-like body, from which two arms sweep out to each side. The arms are wrapped in acanthus leaves and end in flared bobèches with candle cups. The metal has a warm, mellow patina.
One arm needs a small repair to the pin that holds its cup, and this will be done in our workshop before the sconce is sent. Once mended, it is ready for many more years of use. It suits a hallway, a dining room or a classic living room.
In short, this is a vintage Rococo style two-light wall sconce with a scrolled cartouche backplate and acanthus arms. It is 40 cm tall and exactly as pictured, with the arm repair completed before dispatch.
