Vintage Small Rococo Style Wall MirrorShaped Gold-Tone Frame with Shell Crest and Patina, 37 × 25 cm

Before electric light, a mirror was a precious thing. It doubled the light of a window or a candle and brightened a dim room, and a small mirror near the door gave the household one last look before going out. Mirror frames became a favourite place for decoration, and in the Rococo period they broke free from plain rectangles into curving, playful outlines.

This small wall mirror follows that Rococo spirit. Its frame curves in and out along all four sides, giving the glass a soft, shaped outline rather than straight edges. At the top sits a small crest of fanned leaves, like a shell opening, and at the bottom a scrolled shell finishes the frame. A crest like this is called a pediment, the decorative peak borrowed from architecture, where it crowns doorways and windows. The frame is finished in gold with a darker patina in the recesses, which brings out the depth of the mouldings.

The mirror is in very good condition, and the glass is clear and well preserved. We will make sure it reaches you in the same state. It is just the right size to hang by the front door for a last glance before you go out, or in a bedroom or powder room.

In short, this is a vintage small Rococo style wall mirror, with a shaped gold-tone frame, a shell crest and a soft patina. It measures 37 × 25 cm and is exactly as pictured.
