Antique Bronze Bouillotte Lamp, Swan-Head Arms — French Empire Style, Circa 1910s

The Empire style that swept France in the early nineteenth century drew heavily on classical and Napoleonic imagery, and the swan was among its favorite motifs — a creature associated with grace and, through Empress Joséphine's own taste for it, with the imperial court itself. Decades after the style's first flowering, French bronze workshops kept producing lamps and furniture in that same vocabulary, swans and laurel and acanthus repeated in new pieces for a public still drawn to the look of empire.

This bouillotte lamp, circa 1910s, carries that Empire style through to its base: three curved arms terminate in candle sockets, each arm springing from a swan's head modeled with a curved neck and defined beak, gathered around a central column on a circular bronze tray. Note how the swan heads are fully three-dimensional, with the neck curving away from the body of the lamp rather than sitting flat against it — the kind of sculptural confidence that separates a well-cast bronze from a simplified later casting.

A dark, crackle-finished tole shade with a gold leaf border sits above, adjustable along the central stem in the bouillotte tradition.
