Antique Gilt Figural Mantel Clock on Alabaster Base, Young Saint John the Baptist with Cross and Lamb, Striking, circa 1855
The young Saint John the Baptist sits beside this little clock, a curly-haired child with a slender cross-topped staff in his hand and a lamb resting at his feet, the traditional emblems of the saint who foretold the coming of Christ. He’s draped in a camel-hair cloak, cast in rich gilding that glows against the milky white alabaster base. The round white enamel dial, with crisp black Roman numerals and a beaded bezel, sits in a gilt drum framed by scrolls and a spray of palm leaves. Below, the alabaster plinth is hung with gilt chain swags and cast flower mounts, rolling into scrolls at each end and standing on gilt bun feet. It’s a graceful piece of Second Empire craftsmanship that strikes on a bell at the hour and half hour.
Condition: Good Antique Condition. The clock is described as running and striking, and the enamel dial is in very good condition. There is natural wear to the gilding, and the alabaster has light marks consistent with age, as pictured.
