Antique Vienna Style Patinated Bronze Bedouin Rider on Camel, Orientalist Sculpture with Pistol and Wire Reins, circa 1900
A hooded rider leans forward in the saddle, one arm flung out to point a pistol ahead while the other gathers the reins, as his dromedary lunges across the desert sand. The detail packed into this small bronze is remarkable: the folds of the rider’s burnous and the fringed tassels of his belt, the patterned saddle cloth with its zigzag and striped borders, and the camel’s shaggy neck and open mouth straining against the fine wire reins. It’s typical of the finely worked Orientalist bronzes made in Vienna around 1900, when scenes of desert travel were hugely popular in European interiors. The rich brown patina lifts to warm gold on the high points. At just over 5 inches tall, it’s a jewel of a piece for a desk, a bookshelf or a cabinet.
Condition: Good Antique Condition, with a natural patina and light wear to the high points and base edge, consistent with age, as pictured.
