Antique Pair of Large Transition Style Bronze-Tone Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Urn Crest

These two are heavy enough that you notice it as soon as you lift one. Hung as a pair, they give a wall real presence, whether they flank a fireplace, a tall mirror or a doorway.

Each sconce has a long, tapering shaft with fluting and hanging leaf drops, ending in a small cone-shaped finial at the base. At the top sits a two-handled urn crowned with a pine-cone finial. Two scrolled arms, wrapped in curling leaves, curve out from the shaft, and each holds a drip pan and a candle cup. "Transition" is the name for the short period in France, around 1760 to 1775, when designers were moving from the curves of Louis XV to the straight lines of Louis XVI. Pieces from that time often mix both: here, the scrolled arms look back, and the urn and fluted shaft look forward.

The sconces are in good antique condition. The patina has darkened, with a few small green spots, and the candle sleeves are missing. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have survived together as a pair for many years and are ready for a new wall. Hang them in a dining room, a stairwell or a high-ceilinged hall.
