Vintage Neoclassical Style Silver-Tone Oval Jardinière Centrepiece with Laurel CartouchePierced Sides and Fan-Shaped Cut Glass Liner

A clear glass fan rises from the middle of this long oval centrepiece, set inside a silver-tone frame hung with laurel garlands. Filled with flowers or fruit, it fills the middle of a dining table.

The frame is oval and made of silver-tone metal. It has pierced vertical slots along the sides, a band of interlaced pattern and a central oval cartouche framed by a laurel garland, a ribbon and small husk drops. Angular handles wrapped in laurel rise at each end, and it stands on four tapering fluted feet. Inside sits a clear cut glass liner with a raised fan-shaped panel at the back. In French, a long table centrepiece like this is called a "surtout de table", meaning "over the whole table". It was made to run down the middle of a formal dinner, holding flowers, fruit or sweets.

The centrepiece is in good vintage condition, with tarnish and oxidation to the silver-tone finish, and it hasn't been restored. It has graced many dinner tables, and it's ready for more. Use it on a dining table, a sideboard or a hall console, with flowers, fruit or a low plant.
