Antique Pâte de Verre Vase Signed ValPurple Acid-Etched Lakeside Landscape, Squat Bulbous Form
Delivered free · US duties paid · Insured
The mountains here seem to rise directly out of the glass rather than sit on top of it, painted in deep violet tones that fade to a pale, misted horizon, a lone tree bending across the top of the scene as though caught in a breeze. This is the true pâte de verre technique, glass paste worked and acid-etched to hold color in soft, atmospheric layers rather than sharp outlines, a method closely associated with the great decorative glassmakers of the early twentieth century who signed their work

The mountains here seem to rise directly out of the glass rather than sit on top of it, painted in deep violet tones that fade to a pale, misted horizon, a lone tree bending across the top of the scene as though caught in a breeze. This is the true pâte de verre technique, glass paste worked and acid-etched to hold color in soft, atmospheric layers rather than sharp outlines, a method closely associated with the great decorative glassmakers of the early twentieth century who signed their work "Val." It evokes the atmosphere of a lakeside evening captured in miniature, small enough to hold in one hand, yet detailed enough to reward close and repeated looking.
The vase has a low, squat, bulbous form with a narrow, slightly flared neck, the whole body finished in a purple-toned landscape scene depicting mountains, trees, and a still lake rendered through acid-etched, layered glass paste. The piece is signed "Val" to the lower body. It has two small chips to the interior of the neck, visible in the photos.
This is offered as a single vase.
