Art Deco Zalmac Deer PairMarble Base — French Style, Circa 1920s–1940s
Delivered free · US duties paid · Insured
The paired-animal sculpture, set on a stepped marble base, was a familiar Art Deco formula — a way to bring dynamic, sculptural movement into a room without the scale or cost of a life-size bronze. Zalmac, a zinc alloy cast and finished to resemble bronze, made that formula affordable to a much wider public, letting decorative sculpture reach living rooms and offices that solid bronze never would have.

This pair, circa 1920s–1940s, follows that Art Deco vocabulary closely: two deer, one grazing, one alert with foreleg raised, rendered in a bronze-toned zalmac finish and set together on a stepped, two-tone marble base with sculpted foliage at their feet. Note how the two animals are posed to read as a single composition rather than two separate figures placed side by side — the larger deer's raised head balanced against the smaller one's lowered posture, a deliberate visual rhythm rather than a symmetrical pair. The marble base combines a pale onyx-toned upper layer with a black marble plinth below, veined throughout.
Whoever displayed this pair before you kept them well. The zalmac and marble both show honest wear consistent with age, shown in the photographs. It is ready for a mantel, console, or display shelf.
